Karen Ohland Begins Term as ASME’s 141st President; Three New Members of the Board of Governors Announced
Effective July 1, Karen Ohland has begun her term as the 141st president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Ohland is an ASME Fellow and has been an active member of the Society since 1983. Ohland served on the ASME Board of Governors from 2016 to 2019, and in 2020 was selected by the Board to return to complete a vacated Governor position. Since joining ASME, she has held several leadership positions and has served on several presidential task forces, as well as the committees on finance, organization and rules, and the board on professional development. In addition, three new members of the ASME Board of Governors - Susan Ipri Brown, Jared Oehring, and Patrick H. Vieth, have begun their 2022-2025 terms.

President Biden signed the “Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act of 2022” into law, providing emergency appropriations to boost U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and authorizing cutting edge research activities for key federal science agencies.
ASME’s Executive Director and CEO Tom Costabile hailed bipartisan passage of the legislation: “We consider passage of the CHIPS and Science Act a great victory on behalf of the entire worldwide engineering community. Engineering is at the heart of solving many of the world’s greatest problems, from the military equipment used in national security and the exploration of outer space, to the trucks on the road that keep commerce going strong and medical devices saving lives every day. Today’s groundbreaking legislation is a significant investment in advancing the technical capabilities of the United States, allowing us to innovate, compete, explore, and help communities thrive like never before.”
