How do I get certified?

The payment for the examination must be submitted prior to submitting an application. Payment by credit card may be submitted on ASME.org or via phone. Please visit the FAQ section for payment options.
Within 24 hours of making your GDTP application purchase, you will receive a confirmation by email. This email will contain instructions for accessing ASME-PC Connect, ASME’s certification management system, to submit your application.
Once your application has been accepted, you will receive an email with instructions on how to schedule your exam. Exams are conducted at a conveniently-located Prometric Testing Center. You have 180 days to schedule your exam from the time your application is approved. 
Even if you have used GD&T in the past, you will need to review the specific details in ASME Y14.5 - 1994 or ASME - Y14.5 2009 depending on which exam you register for.  Previously GDTP certified professionals have used study guides, training courses and mentoring to prepare for the exam.  Check out the FAQ for additional ASME resources.
ASME will notify you of your test results. If your test was successful, you will be notified via email and have the ability to download a digital copy of the certificate and you will be entered to certificate holder's listing on ASME-PC Connect. If your test was not successful, you will be provided with instructions for a retest. 
An applicant who passes the GDTP exam will be issued a certificate. Certificates will identify the Y14.5 Standard revision the certification is based on, and the level of certification. The certificates will have an expiration date of three years from the date of issuance. Visit the FAQ section for information on re-certification.

Technologist Levels (ASME Y14.5-1994 or ASME Y14.5-2009)

The Technologist level examination emphasizes the applicant’s knowledge of GD&T principles, concepts, and practices in accordance with. ASME Y14.5-1994 or ASME Y14.5-2009. Certification indicates that the individual has demonstrated competencies in the understanding of the symbols, modifiers, and relationships of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as applied to engineering drawings and related documentation.

In order to be certified as a Technologist GDTP, applicants must successfully pass the Technologist GDTP Examination. There is no experience requirement.

Senior Levels (ASME Y14.5-1994 or ASME Y14.5-2009)

The Senior level examination emphasizes knowledge, selection, and application of the dimensioning and tolerancing principles, concepts, and practices contained in ASME Y14.5-1994 or ASME Y14.5-2009, including appendices.  Certification indicates that the individual has demonstrated competencies in the understanding of geometric tolerancing and related principles, tolerance calculation, datum feature selection, application of modifiers in feature controls and composite tolerances. Requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must have five years (60 months) of documented experience in the field of GD&T in the recognized use of the system in both application and understanding 
  • Successfully pass the Senior GDTP Examination. 
  • Note: It is not required to be a certified GDTP Technologist to qualify for Senior Level certification. ASME membership is not an exam requirement. 

Who should get certified:
Product Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, Tooling Engineers, Draftspersons.  If you work in product design, manufacturing, or tooling engineering, or as a draftsperson in industries that design and manufacture complex products or systems, operate global supply chains, face strict regulatory requirements, involve multiple sites or locations, work with distributed teams, or manage projects that require precision in their design and manufacturing processes, GD&T is critical to achieving first-time right success.
