How do you make parts for the Mars Rover? With GD&T.

GD&T, or Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, is a symbolic language used by engineers to convey precise design intent to the manufacturers who produce their parts and assemblies.  Unlike traditional blueprints, GD&T drawings define four critical design properties: Form, Location, Orientation, and Size, and emphasize a part’s function. This enables greater accuracy and less waste in manufacturing - whether making a foot for a table or a part that will be going into Space. 

ASME's Y14.5 standard is considered the authoritative guideline for the design language of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. It establishes symbols, rules, definitions, requirements, defaults, and recommended practices for stating and interpreting GD&T and related requirements for use on engineering drawings, models defined in digital data files, and in related documents.
